If you are already familiar with SEO, you still may pick up a few pointers.

Where to begin with SEO?

1. Keyword Research

Before purchasing a domain name do vertical keyword research first to find out what keywords people are searching on. This will help sort out what works and what doesn’t work before deciding on a niche.

Calculate KEI (keyword effectiveness index). This gives you an idea how important a keyword is. KEI is calcuated on the search engine result number.

Don’t use too many keywords in your titles or page content. Keep your titles consise and write your content in a conversational manner.

Place keywords in title , description and keyword meta tags.

2. Site Structure.

Your web site must be friendly to the search engine spiders. Don’t use lots of javascript and flash. It should be kept static and clean. Search engines find your web site through links that are already on the web. Make sure all your deep links can be reached from the homepage.

The links should be straight html links.

3. Good Content

This is content that makes customers what to return to your web site on a regular basis.

Add a “bookmark this page” button. This makes it easy for your visitors to return for fresh content.

Try to be leader in your field by adding content through blogs, how to articles, podcasts or videos. It should be content that people want to read so don’t stray from the topic of your site otherwise you will lose your visitors. Good content will attract links because visitors will want to link to information valuable to their readers.

Don’t keep content hidden. ie content could be hidden in forms, images

3. Get good links
Build a link-worthy site. High value links give you high rankings. Obtain links from relevant sites. Even though links from non-relevant sites won’t hurt you it won’t help your site much.

Get more links than your closest competitor (No 1 competitor). The more links the better. If your competitor has 300 links and you only have 50 then you have a long way to catch up.

You can do this with:

Link Bait – providing free tools, articles.
Buying links – not a recommended practice because you may get slapped by the search engines.

Use proper anchor text when obtaining links.

4. Web Marketing

Relevancy – ie good writing, good content is material that is relevant to your subject matter.
Popularity – earn links from peers ie forums, blogs, enthusiasts, researchers, folks in academics.

If your site is appealing to your visitors you will naturally attract high quality links.

Be consistent. Don’t try too many different techniques or do too much too soon. The results will not be seen immediately. Try one technique at a time then wait to see its affect.

Common SEO mistakes to avoid

Trying to be someone else
Avoid duplicate content
Don’t use identical title tags and meta tags throughout your site.
Avoid linking to the home page with the name “home”.
Avoid too much link swapping.
Avoid drop-down navigation.
Avoid SEO email scams.

Conclusion

SEO is a roller coaster ride because you will see your site go up and down a few spots in the search engines. Don’t worry about this because that’s normal so just enjoy the ride.
