Have you ever felt like you haven’t accomplished anything by the end of the day even though you remained busy? If you repeat this trend day after day for several weeks you won’t end up building a successful online business.
One of the most difficult tasks for a busy online business person is how to accomplish all the tasks you need to get done in one day without being overwhelmed.
Here are 7 tips on how to be a more productive person:
1. Create a list
Before you begin the day create a list of all the tasks you need to get done today. I usually have a yellow note pad and pen located next to my mouse pad. I divide the page it into 2 columns…the left for business tasks and the right column for other activities ie dentist appointment, pick up the kids from school, etc.
2. Prioritize your list
Place your the most important tasks at the top of your list so they get done first. For example if your most creative time is in the morning then write a new article during this time before checking your e-mail or conversing with people on social media sites.
3. Do the most difficult tasks first
Most people follow the path of least resistance so you’ll want to do the easiest and most fun tasks first. Instead discipline yourself to tackle the more difficult ones first then reward yourself by doing the easier ones later.
I confess I used to check all the news sites before working on business activities because it was fun keeping up with the latest news. I discovered that after reading the news for one hour it was hard to motivate myself to create new content thus stifling my path to success.
Example
One of my goals for today was to create new content for this article and post it on my blog. I was not motivated to sit down at my computer so I took out a piece of paper, thought for a while what to write about, then decided I would write for only 30 minutes. Well, I completed writing this article within one hour.
An alternative option would be to write for 30 minutes then complete the task the next day or over several days if there was a lot content to write about.
4. Work in blocks of time
It’s easy to get burnt out after working for a long period of time. Instead work in blocks of time then take a break to maintain your energy, focus and effectiveness.
Example
Most mornings I work for 2 hours, break for half an hour then work another 2 hours. After lunch it’s harder for me to focus so I’ll work for 30 minutes, break for 10 minutes then work another 30 minutes. This helps maintain my energy levels. Most afternoons I’ll take a 2 hour break (swimming, running or walking) to recharge my batteries for the evening’s activities.
5. Work on business building activities
When you’re working on your own it’s easy to lose sight of the most significant tasks which build your business (ie creating new content, marketing). Don’t fall into the illusion of spending large amounts of time on Facebook falsely thinking this is your most productive time. Instead set aside a specific time period to interact with social media sites (like 30 minutes a day) but spend most of your time on business building activities.
6. Be consistent
To be successful in business means doing your most important tasks on a consistent basis (i.e. creating and publishing new content every day or every few days). After a while it becomes easier because you made them into a habit.
7. Have fun
All work and no play creates a dull person. Even though there may be some tasks you won’t enjoy, don’t let them steal your joy. If you invest your heart and passion into your business it will rub off onto your customers.
If you implement these 7 tips each day you’ll stay focused, become more productive and be well on your way to building a successful online business.
