How To Download Videos From YouTube On iPhone Or Android To Watch Offline

Have you ever been on a flight but couldn’t watch a YouTube video because you didn’t have internet access?

In the video below, I’m going to show you how to download videos from YouTube on your iPhone or Android device so you can watch them offline. You won’t need an internet connection.

I’m also going to show you how to save videos to your iPhone or Android device without downloading them, but you do need an internet connection.

Here’s how to download videos from YouTube app on iPhone or Android using YouTube premium.

Keep in mind you can’t legally download other people’s videos without a YouTube premium subscription.

Step 1
Make sure you subscribe to YouTube Premium.
Go to youtube.com/premium and click on Try It For Free. You get a one-month free trial before you are billed $11.99 per month.

You’ll get a pop-up saying Welcome to YouTube Premium your membership is now active, and benefits start immediately.

If you click on manage membership, you’ll be able to deactivate your account, edit your billing, and add a backup payment method.

After you subscribe, you can download any video to your iPhone or Android device.

Step 2
Tap the YouTube app.

Select the video that you wish to watch.

Step 4
Tap the three dots…

Tap download.

Select the video quality. I’m going to select high 720p.

Tap okay.

It says downloads remain available as long as your device has an internet connection every 30 days.

Step 6
Check out the downloaded video in your Library tab. Tap Library.

Tap downloads.

Here’s the video that I have downloaded.

It says downloads remain available as long as your device has an internet connection every 30 days.

I tap the video. It will start playing.

I can also download playlists. Tap download playlists.

Let’s check if a downloaded video still appears on my phone even though I don’t have an internet connection.

I’m going to go to settings,

I’m going to turn off the Wi-Fi.

I’m going to turn off cellular data.

It says my cellular data is turned off.

Tap the YouTube app again.

I’ve still got my downloaded video even though I don’t have an internet connection.

Tap the video.

I can still watch it even though I don’t have an internet connection, so that’s pretty cool.

What if I want to remove the downloaded video?


Tap Downloads.

Tap the three dots.

Tap delete from downloads.

It says video deleted from downloads. I can undo it if I want to.

Let’s try downloading another video to my phone.

Turn on cellular data

Turn on the Wi-Fi. Now I can look for another video.

Tap the YouTube app.

I’ll be looking for a mini bands video because I want to to strengthen my muscles.

I’m going to check out this video.

Tap the three dots.

Tap download.

I can select the quality, 720, that’s fine. Click okay,

It shows it’s downloading.

Tap the library.

Here’s my downloads. Tap downloads,

Here’s the downloaded video.

What if you don’t subscribe to YouTube Premium, can you still save a video to your iPhone or Android device?
Absolutely. You just need an internet connection.

Here’s what you do.

Tap the YouTube app.

Tap three dots.

I can save it to watch later playlist to watch it later, or I can tap “save to playlist”, and I can save it to one of my own playlists.

I can also create a new playlist and just save my videos to that playlist.

Create a title for it

Select the privacy settings. It’s probably going to be unlisted or private, so let’s select private.

I’m going to call this Miniband, and click create.

Now I can tap the three dots

.Tap save to playlist.

Here it is, it’s already in my Miniband playlist.

If I tap library

I’ve got my downloads, I’ve got my videos, purchases, watch later, and I’ve got my playlists.

Here’s my Miniband playlist, so I tap on that.

If I tap the trash icon,

I can delete the playlist,

I can add a description, and

I could also download it (with Premium subscription).

If I want to remove it, I just tap the three dots next to it,

I can save it to different playlists, remove it from the miniband playlist, I can download it, share it, and cancel.

Now you know how to save videos from YouTube to your iPhone or Android device without a YouTube premium subscription.

Here’s some important things to keep in mind when downloading videos from YouTube.

  1. You can’t legally download other people’s videos without a YouTube premium subscription. You can watch videos offline in the YouTube app so long as you have a YouTube premium subscription.
  2. You can download the videos from your own channel to your computer without a YouTube Premium subscription.

  3. Downloaded videos can only be played offline for up to 48 hours. After that, you need to reconnect your mobile device to a Wi-Fi network every 48 hours. You can only download videos five times every 24 hours. After the day has passed, you’ll see the option to download the video again.

    You also can’t download videos if they’ve been removed from YouTube.
  4. You’ve got to be signed in to your account to download the videos.
  5. Some features like commenting and liking are only available when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.
  6. You can watch previously downloaded videos if you’re signed into YouTube Premium account. You’ll find these in the Library tab.
