Web Site Evaluation Criteria

One of the most crucial aspects of maintaining your web site is to evaluate its effectiveness.
You should continually try to refine or improve its performance by asking the question:

How can my web site be more profitable by increasing its sales or subscribers?

7 Top Web Site Evaluation Criteria

1. Design

-create a professional design – it will capture more sales than a template-based design which often contains proprietary code from the software maker.

-text and graphics should be well balanced throughout the site. Don’t use graphics that do not relate to the content.

-design your site for the main screen resolutions. Don’t allow visitors to scroll horizontally to see your page at 800×600..a common mistake.

-make sure your top banner image does not take up the whole screen when viewed at a screen resolution of 800×600.

-design your site using XHTML and CSS. It will make it leaner and cleaner.
-your site should render well in all the main browsers ie Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape.

2. Copy

-your first paragraph should focus on the clear purpose of your site as this is what visitors will read first.

-align text to the right. It’s hard to read when center aligned.

-use blue or black font for the main text…it’s easier on the eyes than red or other bright colors.
-use verdana font for the main text and arial font for the headings.

-use bullet points and short paragraphs for easier reading. Most visitors scan web pages.

3. Navigation

-use text links for navigation not images. Search engines don’t spider images.

-make sure your visitor only needs a maximum of 3 clicks to get to the information or make the sale.

4. Loading

-your home page should take 10 seconds or less to load. If not, visitors will click away to your competition.

-to speed the loading of your web pages, reduce the size of your images, use CSS and XHTML instead of tables and don’t use a lot of javascript.

-when using javascript or css, place all the code in an external file for faster loading.

5. HTML validation

-validate your HTML/XHTML and CSS (http://validator.w3.org/). Your web page may contain html/xhtml errors which will slow the loading time and make it more difficult for search engines to spider.

6. Broken Links

-check all your web pages regularly for broken links. Use Xenu’s Link Sleuth Your may lose search engine rankings if the spiders continually receive errors when visiting the links on your site.

7. Search engine optimization

-if you want your web pages to appear in the search engines they should be optimized. Therefore do the necessary keyword research before writing your site’s content.

-Include these keywords in your meta tags, title tags, h1, h2, h3 tags, image and page names, image alt tags and web copy.

8. Link popularity

-get backlinks related to your site’s content by submitting to the main/specialized directories and search engines.

-write articles related to web page topics and submit them to article banks and online publishers.
