Did you know that some YouTube channels will allow you to contribute translated titles, descriptions, subtitles, and closed captions for their videos?
You can also get credit for the contributions for that video. They’ll be viewable on the YouTube watch page and by clicking the CC icon on the video player.
Here are the requirements to receive community contributions.
The channel owner must enable community contributions on their channel or on their video.
You can select content for the entire video or just add what you know. If you see existing content that’s already been added by the community, you can add the parts that are missing.
Here are the steps to submit community contributions.
Step 1.
Enable community contributions for your channel.
– Login to your YouTube channel.
– Click YouTube studio beta.
– Click transcriptions. At the top you’ll see all the transcriptions for your videos. Drafts are draft transcriptions and you have published transcriptions.
If I click on community, it says, “Get your videos translated easily and automatically.”
If I click on this gear icon, it says, “Community contributions. Turn on or off community contributions for all of the videos you’ve uploaded. This may also turn on the feature by default for new videos. You can turn this feature on or off for an individual video at any time from its settings page.”
For example, if I click on CC, then I can see the transcription for this video. If I click on it again, it turns it off. If I hover over the settings icon, I can select subtitles CC and turn it on for English (United States). I’ve already uploaded a Hindi transcription, so you’ll see Hindi there also. I can just select any one of these. If I select Hindi, then I’ll see the Hindi captions here.
If the video content hasn’t been transcribed, you won’t see a CC icon below the video.
To use this feature, select the default language for your video uploads. What language is spoken most in your videos? I’ve got English (United States). You can turn on here or I can turn on here. I’m going to click turn it on. Now it says, “New languages will be added as soon as the community submits them. Let your fans and the rest of the YouTube community know how they can help with this link.” If I copy this link, paste it into the browser, anyone will be able to submit a translation of my video content for this video.
Step 2.
Select the video you wish to translate.
If you’ve been given the contribution link by the creator, all you have to do is click contribute and contribute your translated version of the content. Alternatively, select the video, click the gear icon, click subtitles and CC, then you can see this video is already been translated into English, French, and Portuguese.
Step 3.
Add subtitles or CC. Click add subtitles CC.
Step 4.
Select the video language.
It says, “What language would you like to translate into?”
– Click the dropdown.
– Select the language. I’ll put Spanish (United States).
– Click set language.
Step 4A
Translate the video subtitles.
Up here, it says title and description translate, subtitles and CC translate. If you want to translate title and description, just click on that. Put the translated title in there and the translated description in there.
For the translated subtitles and CC, just click on subtitles and CC. If I click the actions dropdown, I can upload a file or I can auto-translate. I can just click auto-translate. It translates the captions into Spanish. You can see the translated Spanish captions under the video. After you translated the video content into Spanish, just click submit contribution. For this video, I chose auto-translate from English to Hindi. Here’s the captions under the video.
Step five
Send to the community for initial review.
I just click submit contribution. It says, “Are the subtitles done? No, let others keep working on them. Yes, they’re ready to be reviewed. Note, these subtitles need to be reviewed by others before they’re published. You won’t see them on the video right away.”
Because the translation has been machine-generated, I’m going to check no and just click submit.
How do you get credit for community contributions?
After submitting a contribution, you can choose if your name shows on the list of contributions. In order to get credit for your contributions, you must have a YouTube channel. Keep in mind that your contribution might be modified or improved by other contributors.
Here are three important things to keep in mind.
1. Remember to turn on community contributions for your channel. Once an international audience find your channel, they want to keep coming back for more. Instead of just translating one video, it’ll be more beneficial to translate an entire video series.
2. Invite the community to translate your videos.
You can ask them in your video or invite them in the description of your video. You might also include instructions on how to translate your video.
3. Check YouTube analytics to see how well your channel is performing for foreign languages.
Compare the watch time from the original language of the video with all the other translated languages. Ultimately, expanding the reach of a global audience will result in more views, comments, and subscribers.
