How do you check if your channel is eligible for monetization?

The new requirement is for your channel to have 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months ongoing and 1,000 subscribers total before it will be reviewed to join the YouTube Partner Program.

Here’s how to check if your channel is eligible for monetization…

Go to YouTube Analytics, watch time, go to drop-down box at the top here, select last year, 2017, and watch time minutes. The minutes must be greater than 240,000. If your channel currently is monetized, even if you have been a partner for years, if you don’t meet these two requirements, you’ll be removed from the program.

Why is YouTube doing this?

According to YouTube…

“They will allow us to significantly improve our ability to identify creators who contribute positively to the community and help drive more ad revenue to them and away from bad actors. These higher standards will also help us prevent potentially inappropriate videos from monetizing which can hurt revenue for everyone.”

What features will you be unable to access?

End screens and cards that are linked to associated websites, crowdfunding, merchandise sites, superchat and sponsorships. Here’s the bottom line, you won’t generate much revenue from Adsense alone. For example, you typically earn $1 or a few dollars per 1,000 views, so you need to attract billions of viewers to your videos to generate a decent amount of revenue.

It makes better sense to find alternative ways to monetize the videos on your channel and to make more money.

Here’s 7 ways to monetize your YouTube channel without Adsense.

1. Affiliate products.

The beauty about affiliate products is that you don’t have to do the work, you simply select an affiliate program that’s related to your niche and sign up to get the affiliate link. Typically, you’ll earn a 50% commission when somebody purchases the product from your affiliate link.

2. Sell your own products or courses.

The beauty about selling your own products is that you make 100% commission. The downside is that you have to create the product yourself and also setup the marketing fund. You can also setup an affiliate program for your own products and get affiliates to promote the product for you.

3. Become a consultant.

If you’re an expert in your niche, then you can offer coaching or consulting services. For example, I offer consulting services for people who want to use YouTube to market their products and services.

4. Promote services.

Perhaps you have a service-based business, so you can use videos to promote your services. For example, if you have a plumbing business, you can create videos that rank in the top of the search engines. You’ll get new customers when people Google your business or your services.

5. Generate leads.

This is one of my favorite methods because I use it all the time. For example, I create video tutorials where I send people to a squeeze page to collect their contact information. I then follow up with them by recommending my products and services via e-mail.

6. Sponsorships.

This is where a company or brand may want you to create a video that exposes their products to your YouTube audience. For example, I recently created a video for Video Blocks and got paid a few hundred dollars for creating the review video.

7. Patreon.

Patreaon allows YouTubers to get paid by running a membership business for their fans. There are no contracts to signs and you retain 100% ownership of your creative work. You keep 90% and they keep 5%, so it’s a pretty good deal.
