Link Building Tip: Don’t just build links to your home page

link building

Most website owners spend their link building efforts on their home page because that’s what most visitors see first. This is a big mistake as often visitors also enter your site from other pages. If these pages don’t rank well you are leaving a lot of traffic on the table. You need to build links to all internal pages to multiply your traffic potential.

Importance of building links

The quantity and quality of links pointing to your site affects its rankings. A new website that has no incoming links won’t appear in the search engines because the Net is built on websites linking to each other. Getting a large number of incoming links is like getting votes. Your site gains popularity based on who is linking to you.

A link from a high quality website may boost your rankings more than acquiring 100s of low quality links. This is why you may see a website with 3 high quality links rank higher than a site containing 100s of lower quality links. For example if you get your site listed in the DMOZ directory it will often out rank other sites.

The benefits of building internal links

The problem of only building links to your home page is using the same anchor text. For example if the main
keywords of my home page is about camping equipment I’ll soon run out of ways to vary the anchor text. Google may think you are trying to manipulate your rankings and actually lower your rankings. Obtaining links to internal pages helps strengthen the link popularity and page rank of your whole site.

How to build internal links

1. Vary your links

Get links from a variety of websites so it doesn’t look like you are relying on one web property. Obtain links from directories, blogs, forums, YouTube, social networking sites.

2. Vary your anchor text

Don’t use the same anchor text when getting links from other sites. For example instead of just using “camping equipment” use 3 word phrases such as “equipment for camping” and “camping equipment faq”

3. Link internal pages together

Google places a lot of weight on anchor text within content therefore link your web pages together whenever you have related content. This also helps your readers to easily find more information about a topic.

4. Use article marketing to build links

Writing articles is one of the best ways to naturally build links to your internal pages. For example if you write a guest article on the topic of one of your pages then get it published on a popular blog, ezine or article directory you’ll immediately boost the ranking of that internal page.

5. Create a search engine friendly navigation structure

Many online businesses use images or javascript for navigating their website. Search engines can’t index these types of links. Use text links for navigation instead that include your main keywords. You can style them with CSS (cascading style sheets) using background images.

If you currently have a website with many pages work on building more links to the internal pages. This will
improve your overall rankings resulting in more traffic and sales.
