Creating a website for your online business is useless if no one sees it. You need to constantly drive traffic to it so visitors can read the valuable information you have to offer. One of the greatest problems new and old website owners face every day is how to generate web site traffic. Building incoming links to your website is a strategy that must be done consistently and frequently for your website to be recognized by the search engines. The quality, quantity and age of the links affect how high your rankings will go..

How to analyze links from competing websites

One of the easiest and quickest methods of acquiring new links is to analyze the link popularity of your competitor’s websites. By viewing the number of incoming links a site has and where they are coming from will show you what you will need to do to out rank them.

Here’s the action steps you need to take:

1. Create a list of the top 10 websites on Google

If you’re not on the first page of Google or any other search engine you won’t receive much traffic as most people don’t go further than the first page for online searches. You need to analyze the link popularity of the top 10 websites on Google which currently is the most popular search engine.

2. Analyze the link popularity of the top 10 competing sites

  • Go to Yahoo site explorer (a free backlink tool).
  • Enter your competitor’s website address in the box and click “explore URL”. It will show you all the incoming links for that domain
  • To get more specific results go to the “show inlinks” drop down boxes
  • Select “except from this domain” in the first drop down box and “only this URL” in the second drop down box
  • This will give you the total number of links pointing to that URL. (It doesn’t include the links on the site itself). If you want to out rank any of those top 10 sites you’ll need to build more incoming links than they have.

3. Link value affects rankings

Links that have a high Google page rank generally carry more weight than links from sites that have a low Google Page Rank. For example DMOZ.org (a major directory) has a page rank of 8 out of 10. If a competing site is listed on this directory it will boost its rankings.

4. Steal your competitor’s incoming links

Look through the incoming links from the top 10 competing sites to find directories and websites where you can add a link to your own website. Some will be free or paid links whereas others will mostly be from other sources ie blogs, websites, directories, etc.

5. Obtain links from high traffic websites

High traffic websites or blogs often have high rankings because they are well established and have many incoming links. One the best ways to get a link from one of these sites is to write a guest article that contains a link back to your site in the resource box. Visitors to the site will naturally read your article and link to your website because they are regular readers of the high traffic site.

6. Other factors affecting search engine rankings

Even though link popularity is one of the most important factors to achieve high rankings, there are other factors that affect them. Some of these include:

  • age of your domain name
  • website structure
  • website content
  • site speed

7. Be consistent

Link building must be done on a continuous basis to be effective because your competitors may have a link building campaign in place. They’ll continue to out rank your own site if you stop building links. The best way to prevent this from happening is to continuously market your website by providing lots of valuable content then syndicate that content on article directories and social media sites. People viewing your content will want to naturally link to it if they find it valuable.
