How Much Money Do The Top YouTubers Make?
Ryan Kaji, 26 million. Dude Perfect. 20 million. Anastasia Radzinskaya, 18 million. Rhett and Link, 17.5 million. Jeffree Star, 17 million. Preston, 14 million. Markiplier, 13 million. These are some of the top earners on YouTube, but they don’t generate all their revenue from AdSense ads because some of them get sponsorships and brand deals. I’ll include links to these channels in the description below this video.
The beauty of generating a monthly income from YouTube is that it can support your channel plus you can upgrade your gear like getting a new camera or lighting system. Keep in mind that YouTube takes 45% of your ad revenue and you keep 55%. Your ad revenue will also fluctuate throughout the year. For instance, you’ll make more at Christmas time than you will at the beginning of the year because there’s more advertisers that want to advertise on your videos.
6 Ways To Monetize Your Videos
- Advertising revenue.
This is where you generate revenue from advertisers displaying ads on YouTube videos. One of the typical ads that you may see is a skippable video ad. This is the ad that plays before your video starts playing. You can skip it after it appears for five seconds, and if you skip it before 30 seconds, the advertiser doesn’t pay for the ad. Other ads that you can place on your videos include non-skippable video ads, sponsored cards, overlay ads, and display ads.
As I mentioned earlier, the minimum eligibility requirements to display AdSense ads on your videos is 4,000 public watch hours and 1,000 subscribers in the past 12 months. You also must be at least 18 years old or have a legal guardian that takes care of your payments. Your content has to be advertiser-friendly and you have to link your YouTube account to your AdSense account.
You also have to live in a country where the YouTube Partner Program is available. After you meet the requirements of the YouTube Partner Program, you get your channel reviewed. If it gets rejected for monetization, you can reapply within 30 days. - Channel memberships.
This way you can receive a monthly recurring revenue from members that support your channel and exchange for special perks. For example, if you become a member of my channel, you receive special badges and emojis that help you comment stand out in live streams and comments. I also host members-only live streams and share tips and tricks from behind the scenes. The minimum eligibility requirements for channel memberships is that you have to be 18 years of age and have 1,000 subscribers.

This is where your fans can browse and buy official merchandise that’s showcased on your video watch pages. Merchandise can include t-shirts, sweaters, mugs, stickers, et cetera. You also get a store tab that’s added to your channel homepage.
You can also pin an item from your store during live streams and add your store in the descriptions. Another thing you can do to promote your merch store is add a link in the end screen. The minimum eligibility requirements is that you have to be 18 years of age and have 10,000 subscribers. - Super Chat and Super Stickers
This is what your fans pay to have the messages highlighted in live chat streams so it stands out from all the other messages.
Super Sticker is a digital or animated images that express support for what’s going on during the live stream. Besides appearing during live streams, they can also appear in the chat stream during premiers. When a Super Sticker has been purchased, it’ll be pinned at the top and remain there for a certain period of time. The minimum eligibility requirements for Super Chat and Super Stickers is 18 years of age and live in a country where Super Chat is available. - YouTube Premium.
This is the way you get some of the revenue from a YouTube Premium subscription when they watch one of your videos. The main benefits of getting YouTube Premium subscription is that you won’t see ads playing before your videos. You’ll also be able to download other people’s videos on your phone and watch them offline even if you don’t have internet access. - YouTube Shorts Fund.
YouTube recently announced a $100 million Shorts fund open to anyone that creates YouTube Shorts. The beauty of this program is that it’s available to anyone even if you’re not a member of the YouTube Partner Program. The chances of YouTube Shorts videos getting any of that $100 million will depend if your YouTube Shorts video is liked by the YouTube community.
For example, if your Shorts Video gets a ton of engagement and it shows on the trending tab in YouTube Shorts, you might get some of that revenue.
YouTube earnings and tax liability.
Earning money on YouTube is a great way to get rewarded for content that satisfies your viewers and subscribers. If you live in a country outside of the US but your content is geared towards US viewers, you may be liable to pay tax on the income that you receive from your monetized videos.
Some countries have a tax treaty with the US so it may not be liable to pay taxes for that earned income. Check with your local tax authorities to see if you’re liable to pay tax for the income that you earn from your monetized videos.
How and when do you get paid?
All payments are made to your AdSense account once your earnings have been finalized. Make sure you link your AdSense account to your YouTube account. Your finalized earnings are not transferred to your AdSense account until halfway through the following month.
For example, I usually get my AdSense earnings from the previous month transferred to my bank account around the 20th of each month. Keep in mind that if you’re a small YouTuber, you won’t get paid until you make a $100. You can receive the $100 by check or by direct transfer to your bank account. For example, if you live in the United States and your balance exceeds a $100 at the end of June, you get paid in July.
You’ll also be able to view all your previous monthly payments from your AdSense account. Just keep in mind that your ad revenue will go up and down throughout the year. Closer to Christmas, you’ll make more revenue because there’s more advertisers that want to advertise on your videos. Whereas in January, there’s less advertisers so you generate less revenue.
Here’s how to check your revenue and YouTube analytics generated from YouTube monetization.
Click on the analytics tab in YouTube Studio, then click on the revenue tab. You’ll be able to see the estimated revenue for that month and the RPM, which is how much you make per 1,000 views. You’ll also be able to see the estimated revenue for the last six months and also the videos that are your top earners.
You’ll also be able to see the sources that generate a revenue for your channel such as ad revenue, channel memberships, merch, Super Chat. You’ll also see which ad types generate the most revenue. For example, on my channel, skippable video ads generate the most revenue.
Is YouTube monetization worth it?
Absolutely because it can generate revenue from YouTube in six different ways, and a lot of that is passive income.
Here are a few frequently asked questions about YouTube monetization.
- Can you monetize royalty-free or creative commons videos?
Absolutely if the license agreement grants you the rights to use it commercially. Just keep in mind you want to add some of your own commentary, so it doesn’t get flagged for reuse content. - What happens if you drop below the monetization threshold of 4,000 watch hours and 1,000 subscribers?
YouTube will not automatically remove access if you drop below the threshold of monetization. However, if your channel is inactive for a certain period of time, then that access might be removed. - Does monetization affect the search results?
Your monetization status is not used on how videos display on the YouTube platform. If you create engaging videos that satisfied your viewers who found your videos in the search engines and in suggested videos, then you generate more revenue for your channel. - What happens if you get rejected for monetization?
If your channel got rejected for monetization, it’s possible that your channel might’ve violated one of YouTube’s community guidelines or policies. You can reapply for monetization 30 days after you receive your rejection email.
“But Herman, I haven’t met the requirements of the YouTube Partner Program, how can I easily get monetized?” No worries, just watch this video right now on how to get 4,000 watch hours easily in 2021
