Use Pingbacks to Attract Web Traffic to Your Word Press Blog

WordPress has a built-in feature which allows you to automatically ping all the RSS and blog feed directories every time you make a post. This is a very powerful feature if you want your blog to get a lot of web traffic immediately. You automatically gain backlinks to your blog.

What are pingbacks?

The pingback system is a way for your blog to be automatically notified when other Web sites link to it. It is entirely transparent to the linking author, requiring no user intervention to work, and operates on principles of automatic discovery of everything that it needs to know. A sample blog post involving pingback might go like this:

Alice posts to her blog. The post she’s made includes a link to a post on Bob’s blog.

-Alice’s blogging system contacts Bob’s blogging system and says “look, Alice made a post which linked to one of your posts”.

-Bob’s blogging system then includes a link back to Alice’s post on his original post.

-Reader’s of Bob’s article can follow this link to Alice’s post to read her opinion.

-It enables reverse linking — a way of going back up a chain of links rather than merely drilling down.

How to check if your Word Press Blog is automatically configured for pinging

WordPress automatically notifies popular Update Services that you have updated your blog by sending an XML-RPC ping each time you create or update a post. In turn, Update Services process the ping and update their proprietary indices with your update. People browsing sites like Technorati or DayPop can now find your most recent posts.

1. Log in to your Word Press admin panel
2. Check if you see http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ in the Update Services box.

Tip

Your blog should only ping when you have added a new post to your blog. However there is no way of telling which post was edited and caused your Word Press Blog to ping. If you edit several already published posts, it will cause a ping frenzy.

You can avoid this by installing the Smart Update Pinger. This will prevent you from getting banned for ping spamming.

Benefits of the Smart Update Pinger

The WordPress built-in ping functions are ignored, however a copy of that code has been put inside the plugin to give detailed log reports. You can see which services will accept and reject your ping, and why. “Ping Services Now!” button. This lets you ping all services without writing a post.

Pingbacks are absolutely essential after every post. One can use in-built WordPress features or services such as pingomatic. Lately I have seen some pingback services that ping more websites than pingomatic does. You can find them by searching “blog ping services” in Google. Try them out and then stick to one that works best for you.

Nice tips! I’m sure I can pick up a thing or two from this. By the way, I find word of mouth marketing as a viable way of viral promotion. I’m surprised by the lack of bloggers who actually use such a method. But, that’s just my oinion though.

    Cheers!

Its an older post but still quite relevant, mostly if you are running a WordPress.com blog they will automatically ping many of the larger services for you.

Good day! While this information may be a little dated, I’ve found that Smart Update Pinger is no longer updated for use with wordpress 2.1 and above.

Check out this article for more information about this:

You can use the MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer as a replacement for the Smart Update Pinger

Hi, I just started a blog (www.myteltek.com/blog) and have been writing like crazy. Initially we got inundated with Spam so I activated the feature requiring all comments to be by registered users and enabled the feature to allow me to approve comments before they post. This has stopped the spam but also the positive comments, it also appears to have generated more pingback requests. After reading your posting I think I have a better understanding of what pingbacks are, but have a few questions:
    1) Is my method the best way to control spam on a blog without jeopardizing valuable feedback or SEO?
    2) Should all pingback requests be granted or are people using this for spam – if not all then how do I know which ones to accept.
    3) How do I learn more about WordPress and optimizing traffic to my site via the blog? I have become obsessed with writing, but every time I try to learn something new I find that it is way over my head. I have 0 web experience and would love to find someone to help educate me on this – any suggestions?
    Thanks a lot!
