Video Marketing Success: Define Your Purpose and Goals Before You Begin

goals setting

Whenever you have clear goal purpose and goal you increase your potential for success. The same applies to video marketing. Perhaps you’ve read or heard you MUST use videos if you want to get more traffic to your website or blog so you start creating them without a clear strategy in mind. After creating and uploading several videos to YouTube and seeing no increase in traffic you conclude it’s a waste of time.

Clarify your purpose for creating videos

Videos can be used for many purposes but you need to define the purpose of them for your own business so they can be used effectively by achieving tangible results ie more sales.

Here are some ideas to get you thinking:

  • Generate more traffic
  • Build a list
  • Demonstrate products
  • Create a video sales page to sell products or services
  • Gain top rankings for your keyword phrases
  • Entertain your audience

Instead of just having one purpose you may have multiples ones i.e. generating traffic through gaining top rankings and building a list of subscribers.

Define your goals

Now that you’ve clarified your purpose you need to set some goals for yourself to gain progress. The beauty of setting goals is that once you achieve them it brings you closer to becoming an authority on the subject. It also means you can help others who are just starting on their video marketing journey.

A clearly defined goal would say something like this:

“I want to gain 1000 more visitors per month by creating, editing, uploading and promoting one video per week for 12 months.”

Let me break down what this specific goal means.

1. Specific – 1000 more visitors/month
2. Measurable – one video per week for 12 months
3. Actionable – creating, uploading, promoting
4. Realistic – one video/week
5. Timed – 12 months

As you can see I’ve broken down my main goal (gaining more traffic with videos) into steps that are doable instead of having some nebulous goal that may not produce any results.

Prioritize your goals

If you’re an online marketer you probably have many other important tasks you need to accomplish on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Some of these may include content writing, social media marketing, email marketing, etc. It’s easy to get distracted therefore you need to prioritize your goals by deciding which one is most important to your business.

For example if video marketing is your top priority then make it the first task you do at the beginning of your day by setting aside a couple of hours.

Take action

Procrastination is the number one enemy for online marketers. it may be the result of getting distracted by all the tasks that need to be accomplished in one day so you’re unable to focus on one and get it done. Another major obstacle marketers often face is paralysis of analysis where you want something to be perfect before it goes public i.e. create a perfect video.

By taking fast action you’ll quickly see what works and what doesn’t then adjust accordingly. For example you’ll generate more sales creating several imperfect videos in the same amount of time as creating one perfect video.

Take action now by writing down the main purpose and number one goal of creating videos for your business.
