Why Link Building Takes Time

Why Link Building Takes Time

Link building is one of the most effective methods for increasing the ranking of your website in the search engines. The quality and quantity of links pointing to your site determine how well your site will rank. The problem is many site owners expect to see immediate results. They think if they get 100 backlinks their site will immediately rank on the first page of the search engines within a few weeks.

Why link building takes time to increase search engine rankings

1. Link value

Obtaining links from sites with a low Google Page Rank has less value than getting links from sites with a high Google Page Rank. Websites that have a high page rank are usually not new. They are recognized by the search engines as being high quality because they are well established.

2. Link age

When generating new incoming links, the age of the link affects your rankings. Factors such as how long the link has remained on your site and the age of the site linking to you make a difference.

3. Search engine updates

Sometimes you have to wait for weeks before the search engines visit your site to spider your web pages. This means your rankings will remain the same until the search engines revisit. Low quality links take longer to be recognized than high quality links therefore it will take longer for your rankings to increase if most incoming links have a low page rank.

How to create an effective link building campaign

1. Don’t rely on one link building technique

Search engines prefer to see links from a variety of sources. If you just rely on one technique search engines may view it as trying to manipulate your rankings. So get links from article directories, blogs, forums, news sites, search engine directories, social media sites, etc.

2. Build links consistently

If you suddenly get 1000 links pointing to your site search engines may see that as spam and lower your rankings. Try to spread out your link building campaign by obtaining a few new links every day so it looks natural. Over time the number of links will accumulate and your rankings will increase.

Example
Instead of submitting one article each month to the article directories, try to write 3 articles per week then syndicate them to the top article directories. Repeat this cycle continuously to gain effective results over time.

3. Analyze competing websites

Use Yahoo Site Explorer to view how many and what types of backlinks your competitors have. If the competing site ranks on the first page of Google and has 1000 incoming links from quality sites and you rank 100 with 100 incoming links you’ve got some work to do to outrank them.

If you’re not constantly building incoming links to your website, you can be sure that your competitors are. That’s why they will always outrank you. You need to write several articles each week and syndicate them on other websites (outsource it if you need to or free up some time if you want to do it yourself).

4. Link building results take time

Remember every incoming link you generate will take time to affect the ranking of your website. It may take several months before you see the true impact of the links you build today.
