Creating and maintaining an effective social media presence can easily suck up a lot of valuable time if you haven’t clearly defined your goals. For instance you may have a friendly conversation with someone on Facebook about their dog (which has nothing to do with your business) and before you realize it you’ve just wasted 30 minutes of your time better spent on building your business.
7 steps to using Social Media Marketing in less than 30 minutes a day
1. Define your goals
Not having a clearly defined goal will leave you unfocused on your objectives. It’s easy to think.. “I must use social media because everyone else is using it.” Instead think about your bottom line. Is it to acquire new customers and generate more sales? Begin with your end goal then make a plan to achieve it.
2. Define your target market
You’ve probably heard the expression “if you try to sell to everyone, you’ll sell to no one.” Every person is not going to be interested in your product or service therefore you need to find out what problems they’re talking about and match that to the solutions you provide.
Use online tools such as Quantcast and Alexa to research the demographics of your target market. The more you know about your them the easier it will be to gain new customers.
3. Finding your target market
Now that you’ve defined who your target market is, you now need to find out where they hang out online, what groups or organizations they belong to. For example if they are engaging in conversations on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ then set up profiles on each of these sites to connect with your potential customers.
If they belong to Chamber of Commerce, Rotary or Meet-up groups in your city become a member of these groups to begin networking with people of similar interests. Check how how many members the group has and how active it is before joining. An inactive group will only waste your time.
4. Interact with your target market
Social media is all about interacting with people to build new relationships. Participate in conversations by answering and/or asking questions. Read and comment on their blog posts, subscribe to their YouTube channels and add “likes” and comments on their Facebook pages. Don’t just pitch your products as this will drive customers away.
5. Provide valuable content
Whenever you write an article, blog post or create a video, submit it to your social media sites. Use sections of your article to create new Tweets and Facebook comments. Ask open ended questions to get feedback from your visitors.
6. Set aside 30 minutes a day
Unless you schedule a specific time each day for social media marketing it probably won’t get done or you may spend way more than 30 minutes a day on it in which case other business building priorities willget pushed aside. For social media marketing to be successful you must be committed to do it on a consistent basis.
7. Track your social media traffic
Google Analytics enables you to view where your visitors are coming from, if they’re engaging with your content or leaving immediately. It also helps you identify the social media sites that are sending visitors to your website such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and others. By setting up a Google Analytics account you’ll be able to monitor the effectiveness of your social media marketing campaign.
After you’ve set up your goals, strategies and account profiles, managing your social media in as little as 30 minutes a day can be highly successful.
