How To Shorten A Video Clip On YouTube With YouTube Video Editor

Here are the steps to trim the beginning of a YouTube video using the video editor in Youtube Studio Beta.

  • Log to YouTube channel,
  • Click on Youtube Studio Beta.
  • Click on videos.
  • Select a video that you wish to shorten
  • I select live so I can shorten one of my live streams then I scroll down to select this unlisted video for this demonstration.
  • Click editor. I have an echo at the beginning of my video, so I want to remove the echo.
  • I move the play head to about 4:20 on the timeline
  • Click trim
  • Click split. I’m going to move the play head back to the beginning of the video so I can remove the beginning section.
  • I can also undo the split.
  • I can also choose options, which gives me shortcuts to speed up the editing process. For instance, I’ve got zoom in, zoom out, undo, command + Z, re-do command + Y and I can use the arrows nudging the playhead to the left or the right. I can rewind 10 seconds with J. Fast forward 10 seconds with L. I can also seek backward by five seconds by just pressing the Arrow key to the left and 4 to 5 seconds by pressing the Arrow key to the right.
  • Now I’ll remove the beginning section.
  • Click on preview…it’s exactly where I want to cut.
  • If I want to undo the changes just click undo at the top click “discard changes.”
  • When I’m happy with the edit, I just click save.

    What if I want to trim or remove the end of Youtube video?
  • Click Trim, move the blue slider up to where you want to trim
  • I can preview it by just playing the video.
  • I can split the video clip,
  • I can preview it to check if I’ve removed the end section.
  • Click save to process the edits.

What if I want to remove multiple sections of your YouTube Video?

  • Just move the playhead to where you want to trim it,
  • click trim
  • click split and move it down to how much you want to remove.
  • preview the section

What if I want to remove another section?

  • Just move the play head down,
  • edit trim,
  • click split again
  • move it to a where you want to take out a section
  • just keep in mind you can undo the “split here” or you can click “undo”
  • Preview it again.
  • Play the video to check the 2 sections you want to remove
  • Click save to process the removed sections
  • You can even remove more than 2 sections on the time line

How to shorten a video at the beginning?

  • I’m going to move the playhead to the beginning of the timeline
  • Click trim.
  • Extend the timeline to refine your editing.
  • Click split then move the blue bar to the very end to shorten the timeline
  • Preview it.
  • Click play.
  • Click save changes. It says, “Might take a few hours for your changes to apply.
  • During that time, viewers will see the current version of the video. You won’t be able to make other changes to the video, While you wait, you can leave the site,
  • Click save.” Says, “Video is being processed. Please check back later”.
  • Let’s see how it looks on my channel.
  • I can see that the edit is in progress.

    Here’s an important note.
    If your video has over 100,000 views, you may not be able to save changes to it, except to Blur Faces. Instead, use a Save as New Video option to save your changes. This restriction doesn’t apply to channels who are in the YouTube Partner Program.
