Keep in mind, YouTube strives to surface the most relevant results based upon keyword queries. Less competitive keyword phrases help you identify those opportunities to serve an audience that is not already well served.

Go to youtube.com and enter your main keyword phrase in the YouTube search bar. In this case, I’m going to use “how to make a smoothie“. Instantly, YouTube will give you a bunch of related keyword phrases that are less competitive than how to make a smoothie.

Use Alphabeticals
You can also add alphabeticals at the beginning or end of your keyword phrase to get even more related keyword phrases. If I add the letter “a”, then I get “how to make a smoothie at home with a blender“. If I add the letter “b”, I get how to make a smoothie bowl with strawberries and blueberries. If I add the letter “c”, how to make a smoothie chocolate or how to make a smoothie creamy without banana. You can also use underscores. So if I put an underscore before smoothie (_ smoothie), I’ve got how to make a strawberry smoothie, how to make a banana smoothie, how to make a strawberry banana smoothie.

I can use that phrase, then place a W after it, so I could use how to make a strawberry banana smoothie without yogurt.

After you found the keyword phrase that you wish to rank for, you can look at the top 5 or 10 videos to see if they use that exact keyword phrase in their title. We can see that the top five videos don’t use the same keyword phrase, how to make a strawberry banana smoothie without yogurt.

How does YouTube rank videos in the search results?
Like Google search engine, search on YouTube strives to surface the most relevant results for particular keyword queries.

Videos are ranked based on a variety of factors, including how well a title, description, and video content matched the viewer’s query. Beyond that, YouTube looks at which videos have drawn the most engagement for that query. Search results are not based on the most viewed videos for a particular query. Place your main keyword phrase at the beginning of your title, then add something compelling for the viewer to click on your video.

Ideally, you want a high click-through rate, which means you want to create a clickable thumbnail, a compelling title, and a compelling description because these three are what people see in the search results.

According to YouTube, most videos get a click-through rate right between 2% and 10%. Try to aim for a click-through rate that’s above 2%.

The other big factor for ranking videos in the YouTube search is audience retention.
This refers to how long viewers remain engaged throughout your video. Try to aim for a 50% retention rate, which means 50% of your viewers are still watching your video at the end.

Some things you can do to increase engagement on your videos is
– use a strong hook at the beginning,
– use B-roll, graphics, text overlays,
– change camera angles, and even locations.

At the end of your video, link to your next best video or playlist so people will continue to binge-watch your videos. This will not only help your video to rank in the search results but also get into suggested videos.

Here’s how to track your traffic in YouTube Analytics.
The purpose of monitoring your traffic is to see where most of your traffic is coming from and what search queries people are entering into the search engines to find your video.

If you click on the Reach tab in YouTube Analytics, you can find the search queries for that specific video. This will help you to make more videos using the related keyword phrases that you found in YouTube Analytics. If you can click on the Engagement tab, you’ll see the key moments for audience reaction, which includes how many people are dropping off in the introduction, the depths, and the spikes in your audience retention graph.

When you make your next video, try to improve your audience retention and click-through rate for that video so you can increase the probability of your video being found in search and also in suggested videos.
