How does Joe increase audience retention on his YouTube videos, so he can reach 1,000 subscribers?

YouTube’s goal states, you need to attract new viewers, and keep viewers coming back for more of your content. To get higher retention or higher engagement on YouTube videos, you need to hook your viewers in the first 30 seconds.

You can ask a question, make a bold statement, or entertain your viewers like I did at the beginning of this video. You can also show what’s at stake if they don’t get the solution by agitating the problem.

For example, at the beginning of this video, I said, it’s going to be more difficult to get 1,000 subscribers if you don’t increase the audience retention on your videos.

After you’ve hooked your viewers, you want to give them what you promised in the title, description, and introduction of your video. This is where you present the media content like I’m doing now. Instead of telegraphing the end of your video by saying something like, “Thanks for watching,” invite them to watch the next video that’s related to the video that they’ve just watched.

If 50% of your viewers watch your video all the way through, there’s a higher probability that YouTube will surface more of your videos on other people’s watch pages. If you discover that viewers as dropping off your video halfway through, make shorter videos, then link those videos together in a playlist. Keep in mind, the goal of YouTube is to keep your viewers coming back to watch more of your content.

If you can keep them engaged throughout your video, and then send them to another video that they’ve just watched, they’ll keep coming back to watch more of your content.

How to attract new viewers and convert them into subscribers?

David noticed only his subscribers were watching his videos, but he wasn’t attracting any new viewers

You can attract new viewers through search and discovery. If you’re a small channel or just getting started, focus on long-tail keywords that people are entering into the search engines to find specific information. For example, in this video, I targeted the long tail keyword phrase, how to turn viewers into subscribers instead of just how to get more subscribers on YouTube. When you target long-tail keyword phrases, there’ll be less competition, and they’ll be easier to rank for in the search engines.

The other way to attract new viewers is to get your videos recommended by YouTube.

If your videos get recommended by YouTube, they’ll appear on the home screen at youtube.com or appear in the suggested videos, which are the videos that appear on the right side of the watch page or those that come up next after the video that the viewer has just watched.

Ideally, you want to have a high click-through rate and a high average view duration to get your videos recommended by YouTube.

Another way to turn viewers into subscribers is to customize your YouTube channel homepage. You only get 10 seconds to make a lasting impression for a new viewer that arrives on your YouTube channel homepage. Therefore, you want to have a clear value proposition in your YouTube channel banner.

You also want to have a channel trailer that clearly outlines the benefits of subscribing to your channel as well as sections containing playlists, so they can take a deeper dive into your content.

Place your most popular playlist at the top of your YouTube channel homepage. When a non-subscriber takes a deeper dive into the content on YouTube channel homepage by watching multiple videos in a row, it’s more likely they’ll convert into a subscriber.

How to interact with your viewers (convert them into subscribers?)

Sam noticed he was getting little or no new subscribers, even though people were watching his videos.

One of the best ways to interact with new viewers is to reply to the comments that they leave under your videos. Here’s where you can start a conversation by offering advice, asking questions, and thanking them for subscribing to your channel.

Here are some of the replies I received from my subscribers when I asked them why they subscribed to my YouTube channel.

Dumpster Diving from Adelaide said, “Because you really take the time to help people with their YouTube channels, including mine, as I’m a newbie.”

Cute Pets Central says, “You give honest, informative information that follows guidelines to help people with their YouTube channel.”

Duck_Toggled says, “Because you always respond to your viewers and help each and every single one of them.”

Another way to interact with your viewers is to add a poll in your community tab if you have that feature enabled.

Here are some of the replies I received from my subscribers when I asked them why they’re subscribed to my YouTube channel.

21% said, “You gave me the solution to my problem.”
9% said, “You continue to provide high-quality content.
12% said, “You deliver the content with no fluff.
14% said, “Your personality,” and 44% said, “All of the above.”

Make A Long Term Commitment

John had just started his YouTube channel and was wondering why his videos had not gone viral. When starting a YouTube channel, you need to make a long-term commitment because YouTube is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t expect every video to attract a lot of viewers and subscribers, and don’t expect every viewer to become a subscriber. Keep in mind that if you upload on a consistent basis, week after week, month after month, year after year, those videos will accumulate views and new subscribers.

The success of a video is not determined when you first upload the video.

Keep in mind, the goal of YouTube is to help each viewer find the videos that they want to watch and maximize long-term satisfaction by getting them to come back to watch more of your content. If you do that, you’ll turn more viewers into subscribers,
